The EUFIRE-RE International Conference Welcomed Professor Pasquale Pistone to Romania

On 9 May 2025, professors of the Faculty of Law in Cluj (Senior Lecturer Septimiu Puț – Vice-Dean of the Faculty ; Professor Ovidiu Podaru; and Associate Professor Cosmin Flavius Costaș participated in the EUFIRE-RE International Conference held in Iași, under the general theme “The Safe Use of Artificial Intelligence in the EU Market.”
The EUFIRE-RE project, funded by the European Union, was implemented during the period 2022–2025 at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, under the coordination of Professor Mihaela Tofan.
The conference was highlighted by the presence in Romania of Professor Pasquale Pistone, keynote speaker. A distinguished figure in the field of international tax law, Professor Pistone is the Academic Chairman of the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation, Jean Monnet Professor of European Tax Law and Policy at the WU Vienna University of Economics and Business (Austria), and Associate Professor at the University of Salerno (Italy). He is also the Secretary General of the European Association of Tax Law Professors and a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Fiscal Association.
At Iași, Professor Pistone delivered an outstanding speech entitled “The Use of AI in Tax Procedures: Selected Issues from the Constitutional, EU Law and ECHR Perspectives” and actively participated in all sessions of the conference.
During the proceedings, Associate Professor Cosmin Flavius Costaș chaired the tax law panel (entirely in English) and presented the paper “Tax Profiling as a Tool for Taxing Unjustified Income in Romania.” Professors Septimiu Puț and Ovidiu Podaru also contributed with the papers “On the Real Swiftness of Justice, With and Without Artificial Intelligence” and “Law, Taxes, Vandalism, Art … and an Impossible Choice,” respectively.
The EUFIRE-RE Conference proved to be an excellent opportunity for constructive dialogue between Romanian and European tax law scholars, opening promising perspectives for future research projects in which the professors of the Faculty of Law in Cluj will play an active role.
