In collaboration with the British Law Centre (BLC), the Faculty of Law of Babeș-Bolyai University offers the study programme “Diploma in English Law and Legal Skills” (DEELS).

The BLC is a project of Juris Angliae Scientia, a non-profit society based at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge. The current Academic Director of BLC is Professor Richard Fentiman, from the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge.

The BLC aims to promote the dissemination of English law across Central and Eastern Europe, with its first centre established in 1992. In addition to the DEELS programme, and under the auspices of the University of Cambridge and the Court of Justice of the European Union, the BLC also organizes the Central and East European Moot Court Competition (CEEMC), a competition in which our Faculty has participated in the last three editions.

DEELS is a nine-month study programme (October–June), delivered in a hybrid format (both online and on-site). It includes four core subjects of English law — English Legal System, Contract Law, Tort Law, and Equity and Trusts — together with specific legal skills training (legal research, written and oral advocacy, negotiation and contract drafting, client interviews, examination and cross-examination of witnesses). The courses are taught by lecturers from the BLC team, who are native English-speaking legal professionals.

The DEELS programme provides access to a digital learning platform, which includes written and video course materials, as well as numerous supplementary resources useful for the learning process. In addition, the programme includes eight in-person sessions with lecturers from the BLC team, held once a month at the Faculty of Law of Babeș-Bolyai University.

At an international level, the DEELS programme primarily aims to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge of English law. This is particularly valuable both for understanding English law, which governs a large proportion of international legal relations today, and for enhancing the understanding of national law through the comparative perspective it provides. The DEELS also covers a significant part of the content required for the Solicitor Qualification Exam (SQE),  the admission examination for the legal profession in England.

Secondly, the DEELS seeks to develop and consolidate key professional legal skills, such as negotiation, contract drafting, witness examination, and advocacy.

Thirdly, the programme aims to improve the participants’ command of legal English.

Upon completion of the programme, the Faculty of Law of Babeș-Bolyai University awards 14 ECTS credits.

The DEELS is open to students (of any study year at Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD level), lawyers (both trainees and qualified), academic staff, and other legal professionals.

The tuition fee charged by the BLC is €995 (full fee) and €765 (reduced fee applicable to Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD students, trainee lawyers, and academic staff of UBB). The UBB tuition fee is €100.

Registration is open from June until early October, through the online application form.
