Professor Emeritus

Born on November 3, 1943 in Suciu de Sus, Maramureș County, Liviu Pop was a student of the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Cluj-Napoca, in the years 1957-1959, of the “Ioan Slavici” Theoretical High School in Satu Mare, in the years 1960-1964, and of the Post-High School Technical School in Satu Mare, in the years 1964-1967.

He attended the Faculty of Law of the “Babeș-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca, which he graduated as the head of his class. He obtained the scientific title of “doctor of law” on October 22, 1977.

After graduating, as the head of his class, he was appointed, by government assignment, as a university assistant at the same faculty. He then became a lecturer (1978-1989), associate professor (1990-1992), full professor (1993-2003) and emeritus professor (starting with 2013). He has been a doctoral supervisor since 1994; under his scientific supervision, more than 30 doctoral theses were defended.

During his university career, he held important positions, being the head of the Department of Private Law (1990-1991, 1996-2000, 2004-2012); Dean of the Faculty of Law (1996-2004); member of the Senate of the “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca (1996-2012).

He served, through the accumulation of positions, as a judge at the Court of Appeal in Cluj (1993-1996) and a lawyer in the Cluj Bar Association (1990-1992, 1996-2013).

He was a member of public, academic and administrative authorities: the National Council for the Attestation of University Titles, Diplomas and Certificates (1994-2011); the National Council for Academic Evaluation and Accreditation (1993-2006); the Drafting Committee for the New Romanian Civil Code (1997-2002); the Scientific Council of the National Institute of Magistracy (2005-2010); the Scientific Council of the National Institute for the Training of Lawyers (2012-present).

During the period 2000-2013 he worked as an arbitrator at the Court of International Commercial Arbitration, attached to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania, being president of the Court of Arbitration attached to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Cluj.

International collaborations consisting of courses, conferences, scientific sessions were carried out at: University of Edinburgh-Scotland, University of Dijon-France, Free University of Brussels, University of Paris II – Pantheon Assas, University of Pisa-Italy, University of Zaragoza-Spain.
