The Bachelor’s degree courses at the Faculty of Law of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca last 4 years (8 semesters). In line with the motto of the University of Cluj, “Tradition and Excellence through Culture, Science, Innovation, since 1581“, 444 years after its foundation, the School of Law in Cluj offers its students a balanced approach to legal sciences and a higher level of training for any legal profession and not only for legal professions.
The university curriculum offers a series of mandatory courses, some of which have a historical resonance (Roman Law, Constitutional Law, Canon Law), others are part of the hard core of the disciplines taught in any law faculty (Property Law, Obligations, Special Contracts, Successions, Criminal Law, Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure), and others cover areas of maximum interest (Administrative Law, Tax Law, Commercial Law, Labor Law).
In addition, as time passed, Sports Law, Urban Planning Law, Medical Law, International Criminal Law, Transport Law or Tax Litigation found their place in the course offer. The panorama is completed by professional practice modules (at public institutions, courts, law firms, notaries public, insolvency practitioners or bailiffs) and by courses such as Legal Writing, Ethics and Academic Integrity or Legal Terminology (English, French, Hungarian).
All courses are doubled by seminars or practical papers, which aim to apply theoretical knowledge to practical cases. In the case of a significant number of courses, the recommended bibliography for preparing seminars includes, in addition to Codes or collections of normative acts, seminar notebooks or case collections that facilitate this approach. The use of domestic and international databases is also encouraged.
To the extent that part of the studies are done abroad (for example, within an Erasmus mobility program), the Faculty facilitates the recognition of these courses and ensures reciprocity for foreign students who choose to study in Cluj-Napoca.
Consistent with the principles of Professor Traian Pop, the professors of the Faculty of Law in Cluj present, in addition to what the law says, what the doctrine says and what the jurisprudence says, their own opinions, scientifically validated in the academic community. A good part of the specialized publications in the legal field (treatises, monographs, university courses, collections of judicial practice, collective volumes, specialized journals) bear the legal imprint of the professors of the Faculty of Law in Cluj, and at specialized conferences, in the country and abroad, their voice is heard.
The Faculty of Law in Cluj has its doors open to everyone. However, following the legal path in Cluj is not an easy exercise, because tradition obliges us to seek excellence and to award a degree only to those who are deserving, who have fulfilled all the academic canons and have proven, in a longer or shorter time, that they master the legal sciences. We are proud of the fact that, every year, the graduates of the Cluj Law School have meritorious results when admitted to the legal professions (magistracy, law, notary and others).
