The Faculty of Law in Cluj cannot forget its past, it lives in the present and cannot ignore the future.


Born on 3 November 1943 in Suciu de Sus, Maramureș County, Liviu Pop attended the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Cluj-Napoca (1957-1959), the “Ioan Slavici” Theoretical High School in Satu Mare (1960-1964), and the Post-Secondary Technical School in Satu Mare (1964-1967).
He then studied at the Faculty of Law of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, graduating at the top of his class. He obtained the academic title of “Doctor of Law” on 22 October 1977.
After graduation, as the top student, he was appointed by governmental assignment as a university assistant at the same faculty. He later became a lecturer (1978-1989), associate professor (1990-1992), full professor (1993-2003), and university professor emeritus (from 2013). He has been a doctoral supervisor since 1994; under his scientific guidance, more than 30 doctoral theses have been defended.
During his academic career, he held significant positions, including Head of the Department of Private Law (1990-1991, 1996-2000, 2004-2012); Dean of the Faculty of Law (1996-2004); and member of the Senate of Babeș-Bolyai University (1996-2012).
He concurrently served as a judge at the Cluj Court of Appeal (1993-1996) and as a lawyer at the Cluj Bar Association (1990-1992, 1996-2013).
He was a member of various public, academic, and administrative bodies: the National Council for the Recognition of University Titles, Diplomas, and Certificates (1994-2011); the National Council for Academic Evaluation and Accreditation (1993-2006); the drafting commission for the new Romanian Civil Code (1997-2002); the Scientific Council of the National Institute of Magistracy (2005-2010); and the Scientific Council of the National Institute for Lawyers’ Training (2012-present).
From 2000 to 2013, he served as an arbitrator at the International Commercial Arbitration Court attached to the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and he was President of the Arbitration Court attached to the Cluj Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
His international collaborations, including courses, conferences, and scientific sessions, took place at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland; the University of Dijon, France; the Free University of Brussels; Paris II – Pantheon Assas University; the University of Pisa, Italy; and the University of Zaragoza, Spain.
